I'm a bit late to the Polyvore party (fashionably late?), but I do get what all the excitement is about. With absolutely no sewing time in the last few weeks, I'm a bit desperate to feel creative. I played around tonight and came up with some fun inspirations.

Sandra Bullock is My Hero
I'm not a fan of the extravagance of award shows, especially in these economic times; however, that does not diminish my happiness for Sandra Bullock's win last night. I have admired her since 'Speed' and her speech last night sums up what is marvellous about her: grace, charm, humour, honesty, and sass.
Congratulations, Sandra!

Mango Orange Chicken

A sweet and tender chicken dish that my family loves. I serve it over rice or couscous*.
Ingredients
3-4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1/2 white onion, diced
3-4 garlic cloves, chopped
1 medium orange, cut into eighths
2 cups frozen mango chunks
2 tbsp liquid honey
2 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1/4 tsp cinammon
1/4 cup dried parsley
1 1/2 cups chicken broth
Put all ingredients into a medium-sized crock pot. Put on the lid and cook on high for 6 - 8 hours. Serves 3 - 4 people.
*I couldn't get a photo of this dish as everyone ate it up!

Random Acts of Sewing Kindness
Remember this dress? June Carter's (Reese Witherspoon) beautiful pink pin dot dress from Walk the Line. She's wearing it when she and Johnny Cash (Joaquin Phoenix) first meet at the Opry.

I adore this dress - it's so pretty and feminine - and want to make it as part of my June, June, & Junie Project. However, I couldn't find a pattern. So, I put out a sewing SOS on Sew Retro. Boy, those folks are wonderful! Not one day later, I had an offer to borrow this beautiful pattern:
Fantastic, no? That's the dress! I am so excited and want to send out a big thank you to Crissy for offering it to me. It's a size 14, so depending on the waist measurement, I may have to grade it a bit to fit me. I'm really looking forward to making this one.
Now, if only I could buckle down and get some of my UFO's done......

The June, June & Junie Project Evolution
When I first laid out my plans for the June, June, & Junie Project, it was firmly influenced by the fashion of the early 50s and 60s; specifically June Cleaver and June Carter Cash. As I've chosen my patterns and my fabrics, I kept thinking about the poppy dress that Reese Witherspoon wore in Walk the Line.
I adore that dress. I have the ideal fabric and pattern to recreate it. I can't get Reese Witherspoon's fabulous costumes out of my mind and how I'd like to recreate / reinterpret them. The more fabrics and patterns I look for, the more I find I'm drawn to June's wardrobe:
The yellow outfit. Yellow blouse with a border print skirt with yellow flowers.
I can't find a better picture of this outfit, but it's super cute!
The 'I Do' dress.
June finally agrees to marry Johnny after he proposes on stage (in Canada, thankyouverymuch!)
There's also that gorgeous deep blue (almost black) dress she wears when she goes with Johnny and the band to Folsom Prison. Love that one! Unfortunately, Joaquin Phoenix doesn't seem to come with my patterns or fabrics. Must be an oversight...
As with every project, room for evolution is needed. I'm still going full swing with the project, but it's evolved to have more June Carter feel rather than June Cleaver. Looks like I'll be sewing looks from the 50s, 60s, and early 70s.
Would you like to sew along with me as part of the June, June, & Junie Project? Click here to read more about it and if you decide to join, please leave me a comment so I can follow along with you. I'll be posting my projects here and on Sew Retro.
